The higher tin-to-copper ratio increases the rigidity of the metal, creating more resonant and full sounding bowls. The first bronze bowls were made around 3,000 BC in Persia and subsequently spread through Asia. Our singing bowls are crafted through an ancient process called annealing, where the molecular structure of bell metal bronze discs is altered by repeatedly heating, hammering and cooling until they are transformed into the singing bowls you see today. While it is unknown when Buddhists first began using singing bowls, several Buddhist traditions continue to use singing bowls in meditation practice to this day.
